More for Students

2020 STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION

The fourth annual Student Design Competition is part of APA's ongoing effort to raise interest in the need for equitable, responsible, sustainable, and resilient communities for all amongst the leaders of tomorrow in the fields of planning and urban design.

Co-sponsored by the Divisions Council and the Student Representatives Council, the Student Design Competition creates opportunities for interdisciplinary student collaboration while advancing a current Divisions Council Initiative.

This competition offers graduate students the opportunity to form their own multidisciplinary teams and engage in a challenging neighborhood planning exercise. Teams of five students pursuing graduate degrees in planning, urban design, and architecture will propose a new neighborhood plan for Kashmere Gardens in Houston. Teams will be asked to provide graphic boards and narratives of their proposals including visualizations, site designs, and neighborhood analyses. All participating finalists will attend NPC20 to make their final presentations to a jury of leaders in the fields of planning, housing, sustainability, and stakeholders from the community. The winning team is awarded a $2,500 prize and will be shown in APA publications.

In addition to the Planning Home Action Agenda, the prompt will be focused on the following themes:

  • Sustainable community development
  • Planning without zoning
  • Housing affordability
  • Equitable strategies for neighborhood resiliency
