Planning With Diverse Communities

As the United States becomes more diverse, both opportunities and challenges arise. Planning With Diverse Communities from Planning Advisory Service offers information and tools to help planners better engage diverse groups in the planning process and improve quality of life for all community residents.

Don't forget — APA members may download all PAS reports published since 1994, on topics ranging from big data to urban agriculture, for free. In fact, the entire suite of PAS resources is available to members at no cost. Take a minute to check out PAS Memo, a digital newsletter with case studies and links to learn more, and QuickNotes, plain-English overviews of planning basics to inform public officials and engaged citizens.

Take the diversity and inclusion survey

APA members who identify as full- or part-time practitioners are invited to take a Planning Practitioner Diversity Climate Survey, jointly conducted by APA, the APA Diversity Committee, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning Planners of Color Interest Group. The results will guide development of resources to promote diverse and inclusive environments where planners work and provide a benchmark for measuring progress.
Take the Survey
Read about some of the issues associated with diversity in the planning profession in a post by Miguel A. Vazquez, AICP, chair of the Diversity Committee, and Linda Dalton, FAICP.
APA leaders to meet next week

RESOURCES
Guide to teaching ethics in planning

Planners have an obligation to look out for the public interest, but what is in the public interest? It may not always be easy to determine. The AICP Ethics Committee developed a teaching rubric — a framework and suggested classroom approaches and resources — for instructors interested in exploring the topic of ethics with planning students. The downloadable resource may also be used by chapter Professional Development Officers and others helping members prepare for the AICP Certification Exam.
