Supreme Court's Knick decision overturns precedent
On June 21, by a 5–4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Knick vs. Township of Scott that a property owner can file a takings claim in federal court without first pursuing state litigation, reversing a precedent set in 1985. The decision runs counter to arguments in APA's friend of the court brief that urged the Court to follow stare decisis but clarify the case's legal principles. John Baker, chair of APA's Amicus Curiae Committee, said, "We are concerned that the Knick decision will slow judicial consideration of both valid and invalid challenges to state and local land-use decisions."

APA products win EXCEL Awards
Kudos to APA for receiving two prestigious 2019 EXCEL Awards from Association Media & Publishing. The APA Foundation video, "We the Planners Believe ...," won a Gold Award for Digital Media: Video, and Planning won a Silver Award for General Excellence: Magazines (circulation 20,001–50,000). We're on a roll! Earlier this year the Foundation video also received the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts 2019 Communicator Award of Distinction. Congratulations!

APA's Planning History Timeline: Regional Fair-Share Housing
In 1970, the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission in Dayton, Ohio, adopted the first fair-share regional allocation plan for low- and moderate-income housing. The plan established common housing goals for local governments, included a detailed housing policy package, and led to the spread of affordable housing to counties and townships surrounding Dayton.
