Planning the Wildland-Urban Interface
One-third of all U.S. homes are in the wildland-urban interface, where human development and natural vegetation meet and wildfires have the greatest potential to devastate communities. Every one of the 50 states has a WUI where wildfires pose a growing danger.
A new report from APA’s Planning Advisory Service, Planning the Wildland-Urban Interface, tells how to build communities that are more resilient to wildfire by using a comprehensive approach that includes plans and zoning regulations. Members may download this and all PAS reports at no cost.
The project that produced the report was funded in part by the USDA Forest Service, with technical and financial assistance from state and private forestry programs. |

Community partnership receives Davidoff Award
Most residents of the Old Town neighborhood of National City, California, live in low-income communities of color. Carolina Martinez, policy director at Environmental Health Coalition, led the way toward public engagement efforts that bridged cultural and language gaps and ensured that everyone could contribute to a comprehensive community plan. The product of their endeavors — the Paradise Creek Apartments affordable housing development — is a testament to the importance of equitable community-based planning. APA honored Carolina Martinez and the Paradise Creek Planning Partnership with the 2019 National Planning Excellence Award for Advancing Diversity & Social Change in Honor of Paul Davidoff. |

Water Fronts: Planning for Resort and Residential Uses
After World War II, American families seeking recreational opportunities away from home flocked to resort areas along rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and oceans. But rapid development unchecked by planning, zoning, and subdivision controls resulted in a host of environmental, infrastructure, and public access challenges in both new and existing recreational areas. This historic PAS report from 1959 surveyed the problems; suggested zoning, subdivision, and other regulatory solutions; and called for protective action at both local and state levels. |
