The pandemic has accelerated existing trends toward e-commerce and remote work that will increase the number of commercial vacancies. However, a glimmer of opportunity is present — some empty stores are ideally located for new fulfillment centers, and shuttered restaurants are well positioned to house shared space for delivery-only restaurants.

Read Zoning Practice's "The Industrial Evolution" to learn how industrial land uses have been evolving in response to new technologies and market trends for many years now. Taking advantage of these opportunities will require planners to deliver an honest assessment of the future market for commercial space in the communities they serve.

Plus: Check out how e-commerce implications can extend beyond the curb. In Planning's "Primed for Delivery," technology companies are responding to the shifting terrain with automated delivery vans, delivery robots, and aerial delivery drones.
