Single-family zoning regulations have perpetuated historical patterns of segregation. As the norms of the American family are shifting, it is apparent that single-family housing is less viable, increasingly unaffordable, and not achieving fairness and inclusion. In this live webinar on Thursday, July 30 at 12 noon CT, a panel of experts — presented with APA's Planning and Law Division — examine and discuss federal and state fair housing and nontraditional living regulations, and dive into preparing and implementing more modern zoning codes. Zoning Practice
Practicing inclusive housing

Historical definitions of "family" in zoning codes have regularly excluded a wide variety of groups as unaffordable housing has pushed families to live in larger households for more efficient ways of housing. Contemporary treatment methods for disabilities have also resulted in increased demand for group living arrangements. This edition of Zoning Practice — co-authored by one of the expert panelists in next week's webinar — examines the shift in housing, evaluates existing law, and offers suggestions for how zoning could be adjusted.

100 federal rollbacks — and counting

Last week's NEPA changes set the U.S. back on fighting climate change, APA said in a joint statement with the Association of State Floodplain Managers. And it's not the only environmental protection that has been slashed. The Trump administration has been taking comprehensive aim at federal regulations — and endangering communities of color, climate goals, and federal projects in the process.

As states distribute funds, more relief needed for communities

It is critical that states distribute federal stimulus funds from CARES Act equitably and efficiently, and we continue to advocate for additional federal relief for state and local governments. Send a message to Congress sharing why your community needs direct funding and flexibility.
