Urban flooding and climate change impacts are not distributed equally. Communities that have historically been underserved show disproportionate effects in their homes and neighborhoods. In this latest Voices of Equity in Planning video, Marcella Bondie Keenan, AICP, discusses the intersection of sustainability, placemaking, and equity. "Factors like these are at the heart of where planners need to be working."

Zoning Practice
Balancing the relationship between zoning, land use and environmental justice

Zoning codes and land-use planning practices have historically had the effect of hardening disparities and expressing forms of racism sedimented in the built environment — the latest Zoning Practice reviews the relationships among zoning, land use, and environmental justice. It also highlights strategies cities and counties are using to protect neighborhoods with higher percentages of residents of color and low-income households against polluting industries.

Policy and Advocacy
Enabling planners to lead on zoning reform

New federal legislation was introduced yesterday that would make it easier for planners to overhaul outdated local rules and codes. This is one of the first federal programs to directly empower planners on zoning reform — signaling that Congress increasingly views planning as one solution to the nation's housing affordability and availability crisis, particularly in small and Legacy Cities. Hear more from Public Affairs Director Jason Jordan.

Make an impact by becoming an APA leader

"Planning is built on a foundation of engagement, consensus, and equity."
– Kurt Christiansen, FAICP, APA Nominating Committee Chair

APA seeks leadership to be demonstrative of the communities we serve — we are seeking diversity in demographics, perspectives, geography, and experience among a new group of leaders for the organization. We've improved the nomination process, eliminating barriers and providing clear job summaries and criteria. Nominate yourself for positions on the APA Board of Directors, AICP Commission, Student Representatives Council, or with chapters, their sections, and divisions. Nominations close May 15.
