Nan’s 25 years of planning focuses on small and rural communities. The ASC (environmental planning) has contributed to projects ranging from comprehensive plans to environmental analysis.Nan plans with an ecological perspective that helps communities integrate natural resources, agriculture, economic development, climate resiliency, and growth together to create win-win asset-based plans.Nan writes and reviews environmental impact statements, provides training on these topics, and consults with planning boards. Nan's ASC in environmental planning was important when she helped a community stop an industrial mine from opening. It also helped in her selection by the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation as principal author of two web-based environmental review workbooks for local governments.The workbooks are now used by planning boards throughout New York State. The workbooks won the 2014 APA Upstate NY Chapter award for Planning Excellence for Best Practice.
