About This Trend

Increased dependence on e-commerce, food delivery, and ridesharing services has created conflicts over curbside space and a concomitant need to update curb pricing models. In 2021, the City of Santa Monica introduced a Zero-Emissions Delivery Zone (ZEDZ), a program aimed at providing priority curb access for zero-emission delivery vehicles.

Transportation planners can use curb management tech to manage congestion, improve safety, and generate city revenue, but they must implement these solutions in equitable ways that don't harm the most vulnerable. The Planning article "Create a Curb-Management Framework in 7 Steps" discusses some key strategies for curb management in a time of technological change.
