About This Trend
Social credit scoring was initiated by China in 2014 and continues to evolve. A person's social credit score can influence whether someone is eligible for a loan, their freedom to travel internationally, and even their social interactions. In the U.S., police, immigration officials, banks, universities, and even religious institutions are increasingly using scoring systems to inform decisions, despite major issues with bias. Planners need to consider the risks of using scoring systems in their work, such as when attempting to measure neighborhood success.
