About This Trend

Digital twins — virtual recreations of a space that incorporate real-time data — are an emerging tool that planners can use to make hyperlocal data-driven decisions, incorporate community and stakeholder priorities, and evaluate policies and initiatives through "what if" scenario analysis and prediction.

Digital twins are being adopted globally, from Finland to India to cities in the U.S., such as New York and Phoenix. Applications for digital twins include scenario planning, traffic management, airport operations, climate mitigation efforts, and project proposal development. As cities and regions face a growing confluence of issues, digital twins can help planners integrate a wide array of current data to best prepare for constantly evolving circumstances.
