As Principal Planner, you will manage the comprehensive review of discretionary land development applications in a large and expanding multifaceted community that is leading growth in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This position independently analyzes complex and large-scale land development applications and provides recommendations to the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors regarding project consistency with adopted land use policies and ordinances.
The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of land use planning and land development and will be able to coordinate with other departments and agencies, prioritize tasks, meet critical deadlines while autonomously managing multiple assignments, and present cohesive technical analysis to decision-makers. This position plays a large role in the implementation of the Loudoun County 2019 Comprehensive Plan and is part of the planning team that will guide the evolution the County's diverse Place Types, including rural, suburban, transitional, and urban communities.
This position is eligible for a $6,000 hiring bonus in accordance with the County's Hiring and Retention Bonus Program.
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Landscape Architecture, or a related field; four (4) years of related work experience in professional planning or a related field; one (1) year of supervisory experience strongly preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred experience includes progressively responsible work experience at a level that required management of complex planning and land use projects. Experience using ArcGIS and Bluebeam Revu software is desired. The ideal candidate will have American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.
This position supervises a group of professional planners and requires strong interpersonal skills and a style that emphasizes diplomacy and a willingness to seek reasonable solutions. The ability to think strategically about operational and programmatic issues is essential. Must have strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to a variety of situations including frequent interactions with interdepartmental staff, applicants, top governmental officials, and citizens. Mentorship of fellow staff regarding effective project management, land planning, comprehensive planning, building and site design review, and cultural and resource preservation is expected.
Job Contingencies and Special Requirements
Attendance and presentations at evening meetings and workshops after normal business hours is required.
This position requires a valid driver's license, driving record, credit, and criminal background check. After an initial training period, teleworking 2 days a week is an option. Relocation assistance is available to successful candidates who live more than 40 miles away.
