The City of Commerce is looking for a dynamic and experienced leader with extensive experience in the planning, development review, permitting and inspection functions to join our team as the Deputy Director of Community Development. The Department recently adopted a new comprehensive plan and is currently rewriting our Land Development Codes and Engineering standards.

This individual should be a strong communicator capable of building relationships and effectively conveying complex information. Additionally, we seek a problem solver who can identify and implement creative solutions, demonstrating a passion for public service and a commitment to positively impacting the community.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a strong knowledge of municipal organization and administration. This individual should understand the development and construction process, encompassing long-range and current planning, engineering, and building expertise. Their experience should demonstrate a proven track record of success in managing complex projects and championing diverse teams within a development-related field. Equally important, this candidate will also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, crucial for influential partnerships with city officials, staff, and external stakeholders.

Recruitment Timeline:

  • Application review to be completed by Friday, December 6, 2024.
  • Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule an initial interview by Monday, December 11, 2024
  • Initial Interviews (either virtual or in-person) will take place between December 16 and 18, 2024.
  • Panel Interviews are tentatively planned for January 2 through the 7th.

Here's what you'll be doing:

  • Leading and motivating a team of dedicated professionals in the Planning, Building, and Engineering divisions.
  • Providing strategic direction and vision to align the department with the City's goals, working closely with the Community Development Director and division managers.
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures, to ensure compliance with city ordinances and regulations and elevate our service delivery to our customers.
  • Managing budgets, contracts, and other financial resources, ensuring effective and efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
  • Collaborating with other City departments and external stakeholders to achieve common goals and address community needs and lead and guide special projects and initiatives.
  • Fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the Community Development Department.

Hiring salary is dependent upon experience.

The hiring range is $128,641.50 - $142,935/year.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Public Administration or closely related field. Master's degree preferred. Eight (8) years progressively responsible experience in development related field, including a minimum of two (2) years in a key management/supervisory role. Possession or the ability to obtain a valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.
