The Zoning Administration Department enforces zoning regulations, reviews construction and development proposals, and issues permits. The department also assists the public, monitors zoning regulations, and collaborates with local jurisdictions on amendments. This position reports to the Codes Administrator.

Qualifications, Duties, and Responsibilities:

This is a mid-level position working under the supervision of the Codes Administrator and Senior Zoning Officials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer zoning regulations, review site plans, and issue permits.
  • Recommend zoning ordinance amendments in compliance with KRS100.
  • Maintain accurate records for permits, inquiries, and zoning amendments.
  • Respond to public inquiries and complaints from residents, contractors, and developers.
  • Provide guidance on zoning regulations and development processes in each jurisdiction.
  • Meet with stakeholders to resolve construction and zoning concerns.
  • Serve as a project manager on assigned tasks.
  • Interpret and apply relevant city, state, and federal regulations affecting land use.
  • Utilize GIS mapping, databases, and web-based platforms for zoning analysis.
  • Draft reports and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Knowledge of zoning laws, land use regulations, and general planning principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret legal and regulatory documents.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and GIS software.
  • Mathematical aptitude, including statistical analysis.
  • Experience working with diverse communities.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in planning, public administration, or a related field or at least three (3) years of experience in zoning administration, planning, or development.
  • Familiarity with the development and permitting process.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license and ability to provide personal transportation (mileage reimbursement available).
  • Must meet ongoing continuing education requirements per Kentucky statute.
  • Background check and drug screening may be required.

Work Conditions & Expectations:

  • Full-time position (Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with occasional evening or weekend hours as needed).
  • Physical requirements: Ability to stand, walk, sit, lift up to 25 lbs., and conduct site visits.
  • Probationary period: Six (6) months.
  • Non-supervisory role, but may serve as a lead on projects.
