Essential Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Comprehensive Planning: Develop, update, and implement the city's long-range plans (e.g. Comprehensive Plan) to manage growth and land use in line with state and federal policies.
  • Development Review: Review and process zoning changes, site plans, subdivision plats, and other development applications for compliance with city codes and ordinances. Provide clear feedback and recommendations to ensure projects meet land use regulations and design standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Interpret and enforce municipal zoning and subdivision regulations and ensure that planning activities adhere to relevant state laws. Identify issues with current regulations and propose updates or amendments as needed.
  • Interdepartmental Coordination: Collaborate with other city departments (such as Public Works, Engineering, and Economic Development) and regional agencies to address transportation planning, infrastructure needs, and environmental management in development projects. Participate in regional planning groups to represent the city's interests.
  • Public Liaison & Communication: Serve as a point of contact for citizens, developers, and external agencies on planning matters. Provide guidance and excellent customer service to the public regarding land use policies, development procedures, and permit processes.
  • Presentations & Reporting: Prepare detailed staff reports, maps, and presentations on planning and zoning cases. Present findings and recommendations to the Planning & Zoning Commission, City Council, and other boards as needed to facilitate informed decision-making.
  • Community Engagement: Organize and attend public meetings, workshops, and hearings to gather community input on plans and proposals. Ensure transparent, inclusive public participation in the planning process and clearly communicate planning concepts to stakeholders.
  • Other Duties: Stay current with urban planning best practices and statutory requirements. Perform related duties as required, including field visits for site inspections, and providing technical support to code enforcement on planning-related violations.
  • Two-Five (2-5) years of experience in professional planning, preferably in a development services department or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is required or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable timeframe.
