Position Summary
Clanton is growing! We are adding a full-time Senior Lighting Planner position to our team. This position involves managing the development of outdoor lighting master plans, design guidelines, lighting ordinances, and other policies for cities, counties, and other agencies nationwide. This is a unique and exciting opportunity at the intersection of planning, design, and engineering, and we are open to many combinations of education, skills, and experience.

This role would require occasional nighttime site visits and out of state travel.
Primary Role & Responsibilities
- Coordinate development of long-range, comprehensive lighting master plans, action plans and other technical policy documents tailored to community needs.
- Oversee new project planning, including reviewing RFQ's/RFP's, scope development, budgeting, and scheduling to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
- Support the development of lighting design guidelines and outdoor lighting ordinances.
- Manage project teams by delegating tasks, setting clear expectations, and maintaining high organizational standards, ensuring alignment with financial goals and client expectations.
- Coordinate interdisciplinary teams across planning, engineering, GIS, and environmental disciplines to deliver cohesive project outcomes.
- Collaborate with clients who are urban planners, engineers, or other local officials to align lighting strategies with broader municipal goals
- Apply knowledge of DarkSky lighting standards and outdoor lighting ordinances to create sustainable, community-specific lighting regulations
- Lead the planning of project community engagement efforts, including stakeholder meetings, to inform and refine long-range lighting plans by coordinating with clients, online platforms, translators, and sub-consultants.
- Integrate environmental, demographic, and social equity data into our planning processes to ensure inclusive and context-sensitive outcomes.
- Support a strong quality control process to meet planning industry best practices and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including NEPA.
- Create compelling visual materials — maps, diagrams, and presentations — to communicate complex lighting concepts.
- Stay current with trends in urban planning, lighting technology, and environmental policy to inform innovative project solutions.
- Qualifications and Required Skills
- Bachelor of Science degree in Urban Planning, Public Policy, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Architectural Engineering, or similar
- Seven years of experience in urban planning in the public or private sector, including three years of project management experience
- Experience with long-range planning projects, ordinance writing, and public engagement
- Ability to manage meetings and group discussions involving multiple perspectives on technical topics, including active listening skills
- Strong professional written and verbal communication skills, and active listening skills
- Familiarity with codes and standards relevant to outdoor lighting, including Dark Sky International and Illuminating Engineering Society (IES)
Preferred Skills and Credentials
- Master of Urban Planning or Public Policy degree
- AICP certification strongly preferred, LEED preferred
- Strong graphic design skills including proficiency with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Sketchup
- Familiarity with lighting standards such as those from the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES)
- Ability to lead conversations and meetings with multiple perspectives
- Experience in planning community engagement for master planning and policy projects, long- range planning, active transportation projects or similar
