Assistant Director of Planning and Development
The Opportunity
The Town of Mansfield (www.mansfieldct.gov) is hiring an Assistant Director of Planning and Development. This position performs complex, professional, and technical work in support of the Town of Mansfield's planning, land use, housing, and community development initiatives. The Assistant Director plays a key role in advancing strategic goals that shape Mansfield's long-term growth, sustainability, and quality of life. Work includes independent responsibility for specialized assignments with significant town-wide and regional impacts, requiring strong analytical, managerial, and collaborative skills. The position also provides leadership and oversight for staff and projects, and serves as Acting Director of Planning and Development in the Director's absence, as assigned.
About Us
The Town of Mansfield's Planning and Development Department is an interdisciplinary, collaborative team dedicated to innovation and excellence in public service. The new Assistant Director will join a dedicated staff that includes the Director, Planner II/Zoning Enforcement Officer, Environmental Planner/Inland Wetlands Agent, and Administrative Services Specialist. The Department supports the Planning and Zoning Commission, Inland Wetlands Agency, Zoning Board of Appeals, Historic District Commission, and several advisory committees, including Affordable Housing, Agriculture, Conservation, and Parks and Natural Resources. We work closely with Public Works, Building and Housing Inspection, Parks and Recreation, and other departments on cross-disciplinary projects, continuing Mansfield's strong tradition of teamwork and exceptional customer service.
Mansfield, with a population of approximately 26,000, is located in the Northeastern portion of the state, better known as Connecticut's Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. Home to the University of Connecticut, Mansfield offers the unique blend of urban (Downtown Storrs - www.mansfieldmdp.org), suburban, and rural living in a university setting. Mansfield has a variety of cultural and educational offerings, as well as an abundance of natural resources ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling, and kayaking. Mansfield is a Council-Manager form of government, with the Town Manager serving as the Chief Executive Officer responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town.
Work Schedule & Location
The selected candidate will be scheduled for 35 hours per week, with a four day work week. The selected candidate will normally work four consecutive days, Monday-Thursdays. Attendance at evening and weekend meetings and events is required as needed to support the work of assigned Town Committees, Commissions, Boards, and departmental operations.
The work location is the Audrey Beck Municipal Building, 4 South Eagleville Road.
Education and Experience
Candidates should have a bachelor's degree in Planning, Community and Urban Studies, Public Administration or a related field, master's degree preferred. A minimum of three years of progressively responsible professional planning experience is required. Consideration may be given to equivalent experience, education and training.
American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification from the American Planning Association (APA) is preferred at time of appointment to the position, but required within 24 months of appointment to the position. Must possess and maintain Zoning Enforcement Officer (CZEO) certification; if not held at the time of hire, certification must be obtained within 36 months of appointment. Must possess and maintain CDBG Grant Administrator certification; if not held at the time of hire, certification must be obtained within 24 months of appointment. Must also possess and maintain Connecticut DEEP Municipal Inland Wetlands Agent certification; if not held at the time of hire, certification must be obtained within 3 months of appointment. Must hold a valid driver's license.

BENEFITS
The salary range is $78,579 - $99,553/yr.
The hiring rate will depend upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience.
