JOB DESCRIPTION

Knoxville-Knox County Planning (Planning) is looking for a creative, dedicated assistant planner to join our team. This is a position in the Planning Services division, which administers development regulations and processes requests for rezonings, subdivisions, development plans, and plan amendments for the City of Knoxville and Knox County. The division also studies community growth patterns and prepares plans that guide City and County policies.

About the position:

We don't expect candidates to have experience in all of these types of projects, but the ideal candidate will have experience working in current planning or a related field and is a team player who can assist staff and support both our external and internal customers. The successful candidate will have excellent customer service skills to deal comfortably and calmly with the public, developers, partners, and elected and appointed officials.

A regular day in this position might involve reviewing development requests, conducting research, providing staff support for a community meeting, and answering questions from developers and residents.

Typical job duties:

  • Provide support to the agency's customer service counter.
  • Coordinate/conduct review of site plans of previously approved planned districts.
  • Review applications for properties in the Hillside Protection Overlay.
  • Conduct review of minor subdivision plats for conformance with adopted subdivision regulations and zoning ordinances for Knoxville and Knox County.
  • Coordinate with engineers, surveyors, developers, property owners, or other constituents or groups, as may be required.
  • Assist in the preparation of plans related to one or more specialty areas, such as urban design, environmental planning, historic preservation, land use, housing, community services and facilities, transportation planning, or zoning and subdivision review.
  • Conduct research into planning fundamentals, best practices, or other such topics to support long-range planning, as required.
  • Database entry, as needed.
  • Backup assistance to planners, as needed.
  • Attend regularly scheduled public meetings, some of which may take place outside normal work hours.
  • Provide support for and attend community meetings.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in planning or related field, with two to four years of planning or related experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in planning or related field.
  • Membership in American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).

Salary and benefits:

  • $48,000+ (dependent on experience).
