JOB DESCRIPTION

MIG Inc. is a national firm specializing in planning, design, communications, management, science, and technology.

We are growing our firmwide economic development team and seeking an experienced, mid-level Economic Analyst to join our Downtown Brooklyn office.

We're looking for someone who brings hands-on experience conducting economic, market, financial, or fiscal analysis and translating findings into recommendations. Experience with real estate and housing markets, redevelopment feasibility, and the economic and fiscal implications of development is especially relevant to our growing practice.

This role combines substantial independent analysis with collaboration and communication with internal project teams, partners, and clients. You will manage assigned analytical workstreams with guidance and review from project managers and other senior staff.

Responsibilities

• Develop analysis that informs decisions. Structure research questions; design analysis; collect, organize, and evaluate economic, demographic, workforce, housing, and real estate information; and identify findings that matter for a client's choices. Apply resourceful problem-solving when data are incomplete or imperfect.

• Build and check quantitative work. Develop organized Excel analyses and models, document sources and assumptions, test alternative scenarios, and review calculations for accuracy.

• Evaluate markets and development opportunities. Conduct market research and contribute to housing analyses, redevelopment strategies, and feasibility assessments for sites, districts, and communities.

• Connect economics to implementation. Contribute to economic and fiscal analysis, funding strategies, and implementation plans that identify practical actions, responsibilities, resources, and next steps. Responsibilities will reflect your experience, with senior guidance for specialized methods.

• Communicate findings clearly. Prepare concise and compelling reports, presentations, tables, charts, and other materials that effectively explain implications, limitations, and recommendations.

• Manage your individual workflow. Coordinate assigned analyses and deliverables within project scopes, budgets, and schedules; contribute to multiple projects in any given day or week; communicate progress; discuss interim discoveries and challenges; and identify questions or constraints early.

• Collaborate with colleagues and clients. Work across disciplines and contribute to client meetings, stakeholder interviews, workshops, and presentations.

• Help grow the practice. Support proposals, scopes, budgets, research, and development of analytical methods and tools; contribute to networking and other business development activities.

Projects may include comprehensive and general planning; downtown and corridor economic development strategies; business district growth strategies; housing and real estate market studies; development feasibility; catalytic-site redevelopment; regional economic and industry assessments; economic and fiscal impact analysis; infrastructure and open-space funding; workforce and business growth; and public-private partnerships and governance.

Experience and Qualifications for Success

You are analytical and practical. You enjoy understanding places and markets, working through incomplete information, and helping clients decide what to do next. You bring experience producing substantive analysis, managing your responsibilities, and working constructively with colleagues and clients.

  • At least three years of relevant professional experience conducting applied economic, market, financial, or fiscal analysis in consulting, public agency work, real estate, economic development, planning, or a related setting with at least one year of experience in private consulting.
  • Hands-on project experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • Economic development planning and strategy, including downtown, district, corridor, or regional economic assessments.
    • Real estate and housing market analysis, including demand, supply, affordability, development trends, and redevelopment opportunities.
    • Development feasibility or financial analysis, including pro formas, development costs and revenues, scenario testing, or funding and financing evaluations.
    • Economic and fiscal analysis, including economic impacts, municipal revenues and costs, benefit-cost analysis, or industry and workforce studies tied to policy and investment decisions.
  • Demonstrated analytical ownership. Experience personally structuring and completing analyses, selecting appropriate sources and methods, checking results, and explaining assumptions and limitations.
  • Strong Excel proficiency. Experience organizing and checking data, building transparent calculations or models, documenting assumptions, and testing how changes in assumptions affect results.
  • Experience translating analysis into recommendations. Ability to identify most relevant findings and explain how findings inform development, policy, investment, funding, or implementation choices.
  • Strong writing, presentation, and visual communication skills. Experience translating complex analysis into clear, concise reports, presentations, charts, and graphics for clients, public agencies, or decision-makers.
  • Experience managing multiple assignments and deadlines, coordinating with project managers and teammates, and responding constructively to feedback.
  • A bachelor's degree in economics, planning, business, public policy, geography, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
  • Availability to work regularly in-person with our Brooklyn team and clients.

Applicants should bring demonstrated strength in at least one relevant area—real estate and housing analysis, development feasibility, or municipal fiscal analysis—and an interest in developing complementary skills across the practice.

Familiarity with Census/ACS, BLS, BEA, and LEHD data is helpful, as is experience with tools such as CoStar, Lightcast, IMPLAN, GIS, InDesign, Python, R, or Tableau.
