Historic Preservation

The city’s codified ordinances contain a chapter of historic preservation regulations (Chapter 18). It establishes a historic preservation commission, designates local historic districts and landmarks, and lays out a design review process that requires certificates of no material effect or certificates of appropriateness for exterior work on historic structures or structures in historic districts.

Solar Energy 

The city's municipal code addresses the definitions, requirements, and standards for primary-use (§32.03.D.1.a) and accessory-use solar collection systems (§32.04.04.B). The solar system is consider primary-use when it is the principal use on the parcel or is 50% or more of the land area of the parcel. It is considered accessory-use when it is not the sole use of the parcel or is less than 50% of the land area of the parcel. The municipal code also encourages mixed-use and non-residential block patterns to be oriented along an east-west axis to increase solar access (§32.04.03.3.b).

Food Systems | Urban Livestock

The city's municipal code addresses the permitting of urban chickens (Chapter 23A). It allows up to 6 hens per tract of land and establishes standards for definitions, enclosures, odor and noise impacts, feed, parasites, waste, and nuisances. A permit is required.
