This guide from the University of Washington's Northwest Center for Livable Communities, which draws on food systems planning work in Washington State, provides practical solutions focusing on municipal land use and built environment policies to improve access to healthy food that can be proposed or implemented at a municipal or county level. The guide explains the roles of planners and policy makers in improving food access and offers a "menu" of planning and policy options in seven areas: governmental and institutional development, healthy food retail, farmers markets, community gardens, urban agriculture, restaurants, and transportation. The guide also provides lists of brief case study examples for each area, along with links to sample policy language.
