Food Systems | Urban Livestock

This article examines the animal policies in 22 U.S. cities and identifies five approaches to governing backyard slaughter; many communities do not address the practice at all and the regulations of others show significant gaps and inconsistencies. The article suggests that policy makers have a range of regulatory options for meeting local priorities, whether those are reducing nuisances, protecting public health, or addressing animal well-being.
