Integrated Water Resource Managment

This act establishes a framework for sustainable, local groundwater management. The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) requires groundwater-dependent regions to halt overdraft and bring basins into balanced levels of pumping and recharge. The goal for this to have a sustainable management of groundwater by the year 2042 in California. It incorporates three bills (AB 1739, SB 1319 and SB 1168) that focus on managing groundwater basins at a local scale where it would prove most effective. Under the SGMA, California's groundwater basins are to be categorized relating to priority and Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) will be formed by both local and regional authorities to manage the basins holding higher priority. GSAs are responsible for implementing local Groundwater Sustainability Plans.
