This article examines community gardens in St. Louis to answer whether leisure spaces are perceived as an ideal environment for interracial interaction. Drawing on contact theory, it performed phone interviews with gardeners to assess their level of trust, sense of community, motivation for gardening, and socialization expectations, among other variables. It finds that community gardens can be used to promote equal-status and cooperative interracial interactions.
