This web page introduces the Survey of Market Absorption of New Multifamily Units (SOMA), a program by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Census Bureau and a common public data source for housing needs assessments. The survey collects data from a representative sample of residential buildings containing five or more units on amenities, rent or sales price, number of units, type of building, number of units taken off the market, and senior housing, and releases this data quarterly at the metropolitan area scale.
