This report summarizes the findings of New York City's Automated Decision Systems Task Force. The authors consider how machine learning and artificial intelligence can enhance the ways New York's local government operates. It includes input from the Administration for Children's Services, Department of Education, Department of Social Services, Department of Transportation, Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, and Police Department. It concludes that while AI can enhance archiving, technical information processing, and law enforcement, the city must remain on guard for bias within AI systems and allow for recourse regarding the disproportionate impact that AI might have on marginalized populations and must educate the public on the ramifications of the program and solicit feedback from citizens on the use of AI in government.
