This briefing paper addresses how preserving and promoting the good management of farmland help New York state's goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80 percent by 2050. It finds that if the state reduced its annual loss of farmland by 80 percent by 2050, it could reduce GHG emissions at rates equivalents to removing 1 million vehicles from roads. It recommends actions that farmers, land trusts, planners, local officials, and other stakeholders can take to help preserve the farmland needed to combat climate change.
