Course Details
Our 70+ collective years of planning experience from two seasoned Planning Directors — gained in both the public- and private sectors, will be focused on 15 areas of planning and development work. We think it will be helpful and practical for all planners, especially those in the intermediate levels of the profession: what worked for us, what didn't (and why), and lessons we've learned.
Topics will include: where common sense and hard work meet; working in political minefields; finding and keeping qualified staff; planning department management; working with the high-need applicant; making a bad project good; when planners and attorneys collide; owning (and learning from) your mistakes; public hearing management; good enough v. good v. great; how and when to update your general plan; ethics 101; planners as architects; new technology; and technical writing.
Learning Outcomes
- Walk away with practical insights on a wide range of planning subjects, including department staffing, site planning, technical writing, and departmental budget controls.
- Learn from our successes, as well as from our mistakes — an overview of what worked for us, what didn't, and what to do differently going forward.
- Valuable insights into how to run successful planning and community development departments, making for more effective management of planning organizations and improved customer service.
