Course Details

Empathy is the ability to respond to other people's emotions appropriately, to feel what another person is feeling, and to understand someone's response to a situation. Forbes research called it "the leadership competency to develop and demonstrate now and in the future of work." APA has identified empathy as a notable gap in urban planners' skill sets and is developing training for planners through its Upskilling Initiative.

So, how does empathy help planners do their jobs better? This course will help participants discover ways in which empathy can become their new superpower: Understanding Community Needs, Engaging the Community, Addressing Inequalities, Collaboration and Partnerships, Fostering Inclusive Work Environments, and Leaning into your Authentic Self. Empathy lies at the heart of effective Planning.

By leading with empathy, planners can understand the needs of the community, engage residents in decision-making, address inequities, balance growth and sustainability, and foster collaboration. Our profession has the power to shape the places we live, work, and play. By embracing empathy, planners can ensure that their decisions are rooted in the realities and aspirations of the people they serve, ultimately creating cities that are inclusive, resilient, and vibrant for all.

Learning Outcomes

  • Enhanced Community-Centered Approach: Participants will understand how empathy empowers planners to go beyond data and statistics, enabling them to truly grasp community needs, concerns, and aspirations.
