Come hear the story of how two starkly different communities in the New York City metropolitan region, the City of White Plains and the Town of Bedford, have fearlessly confronted the national affordable housing crisis head-on to create hundreds of affordable housing units in one the nation's most expensive real estate markets. Faced with high land values, stringent regulatory processes, and ever-present NIMBY pressure, both municipalities have persevered to formulate context-sensitive strategies that can be replicated in urban and smaller-scale suburban and rural communities alike.

In order to remain nimble and dynamic in combating market forces, both communities have successfully used an expanded toolbox of balanced housing strategies, including: mandatory inclusionary ordinances, fee-in-lieu payments, workforce preference, provision of accessory dwelling units, incentivizing transit-oriented development, density-bonus mechanisms, facilitating adaptive reuse, and the use of public lands. These successful case studies highlight the value of developing a multi-faceted housing approach to maintain a vibrant and socioeconomically diverse populace.
