Words like first, pioneering and ground-breaking characterize Irayda M. Ruiz Bode’s career. She had a key role leading Guatemala City’s largest Urban Revitalization project, the first Land Use and Development Plan to Belize City, introducing sustainable public facilities planning principles to social infrastructure in Nicaragua, Panama and Suriname. Amongst her professional leadership accomplishments, her role in the creation of APA’s Latinos and Planning Division, Virginia Chapter’s Ethnic and Cultural Diversity Committee and being the first woman of Hispanic origin on the national APA Board. Her career embodies the values diversity, inclusion, and participatory planning with emphasis on aiding underserved communities.

Professional Biography

More than twenty years of professional experience working for international entities such as the World Bank, Interamerican Development Bank, USAID and KFW in all aspects of infrastructure planning and urban development. Her expertise focuses on participatory design process for planning, construction and management of public infrastructure and sustainable development working for more than 14 countries in Latin America, and the US. Providing supervision while applying design and construction to ensure environmental and cultural pertinence of project execution to ensure technical integrity. Research focus public facilities planning, international migrations, transnational communities and spatial anthropology promoting inclusiveness and equitable development. Current President of the Iberoamerican Federations of Urban Planners (FIU) for the 2022-2026 period.
