Successful downtowns typically include a diverse mix of uses. While residences have long been part of this use mix, the number of downtown residences is on the rise in many communities. This influx of new residents often creates greater interest in noisier nighttime uses, such as restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and theaters, and heightens the potential for noise-related conflicts among users.
