Many cities and counties are examining opportunities to promote residential infill in existing neighborhoods to expand housing choices and satisfy demand for affordable housing. For many of these communities, the key challenge associated with opening up single-family zoning districts to accessory dwellings, duplexes, triplexes, and other forms of "missing middle" housing is ensuring compatibility with the established built form.
This issue of Zoning Practice profiles communities that have taken steps to expand housing options in lower-density residential districts. It highlights specific zoning strategies and discusses how some cities have refined their approaches to better address community concerns.
