Chapter, Division, and Student Elections

Every year, APA members run for elected Leadership positions within three component groups: Chapters, Divisions, and the Student Representatives Council. Serving as an elected Leader offers a tremendous opportunity for members to sharpen their skills, expand their networks, and work directly to strengthen the impact of the organization.

APA's 47 Chapters are valuable local connections that provide members with professional development, networking opportunities, legislative programs, scholarships, awards, and more. Serving as an elected Chapter leader is a critical opportunity to leave your mark on your own community.

Chapters participating in this year's consolidated election include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, National Capital Area, North Carolina, Northern New England, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington, Western Central, and Wisconsin.

Divisions at APA are communities of professionals with shared interests and identities. With four population-based Divisions (Planning and the Black Community, Latinos and Planning, LGBTQ and Planning, and Women and Planning) and 18 subject area Divisions (including Federal Planning, Planning and Law, Sustainable Communities, Urban Design and Preservation, and more), APA seeks to create a space for members from vastly different backgrounds.

The Student Representatives Council (SRC) is a place for students and emerging professionals to jumpstart their path within the planning profession. Elected leaders within the SRC help make connections between APA's growing student population and contribute to strategic initiatives across the organization.

Nominations for Component Elections

Are you interested in running for a Leadership position with Chapters, Divisions, or the Student Representatives Council? The call for nominations is open between March 15 and May 15.

Many chapter and division member newsletters and websites will contain information and announcements about the specific positions up for election this year. You can also contact your local Chapter President, or appropriate Division Chair, or member of the Student Representatives Council Executive Committee for more information about opportunities in APA component leadership.

All these positions require a 600-word (maximum) candidate statement, which is a combination of biographical background and a position statement of why you want to serve. Candidates for these offices can also upload an photograph (optional).

APA is committed to seeking a diverse group of leaders for the organization, including candidates which reflect diversity of experience and knowledge (practice setting, specialty); geography (regional distribution, rural and big city); race, age, gender, sexual orientation, culture, ethnicity, creed and belief (spiritual, political), and ability.
